The height of a trapezoid is 8 inches and its area is 96 inches squared. One base of the trapezoid is 6 inches longer than the other base. What are the lengths of the bases? Explain how you found your answer.

Answers

Answer 1
Answer: Let the length of one base = x.   Length of other = x + 6.

Area = (1/2)*(Sum of bases ) * height

96 = (1/2) *(x + x + 6) * 8

96 =  (2x + 6) * 4

96/4 = 2x + 6

24 = 2x + 6

2x + 6 = 24

2x = 24 - 6

2x = 18

x = 18/2

x = 9.

Length of bases are x, and x + 6.   9   and 9+6 = 15.

Lengths of bases are 9 and 15 inches.

A cube has a volume of 1000 cubic feet. What us the edge length of the cube?

Answers

The volume of a cube is given by;

(One length side of the cube)³ - remember all sides of a cube are the same, just like how both sides of a square are the same. This is essentially the area of the square at the base, multiplied by the height of the cube.

Hence why we that that, for example 4³, is "4 cubed"

So we know that;

volume = (side length)³

Alternatively we could say that;

Side length = ∛volume

(we have just found the cube root of both sides here, remember we can do what we like to an equation, as long as we do the same to both sides!)

Because we cubed side length to get volume, side length must be the cubic root of the volume, the ∛.

We know that the volume is 1000 cubic feet, so;

Side length = ∛1000

∛1000 = 10

So one side length is 10 feet.

When the siren sounded, 440 were seen walking in the forest. If the other 360 were not seen, what fraction of the total was seen?

Answers

Fraction of the total was seen=(number of people were seen ) /(Total number of people)

Data:
number of people were seen=440
Total number of people=people saw +people didn´t see=440+360=800

Fraction of the toatal was seen=440/800=11/20

Answer: 11/20.

I got 11/9 as the answer :)
