Which tense shows progression or continuation of actions or states of being?

Answers

Answer 1
Answer: I was slightly uncertain about this one, as it came down to two logical answers.  These answers are Present and Future tense, as Present shows continuation and any progression that may or may not have occurred assuming you are aware of the past, but Future tense does the same given it is on a linear timeline where flashbacks are common and the period the narrator resides is uncertain.  I will just say my answer is Present, however, as that makes the most sense given no context.  I hope this helps, have a nice day! :)

What type of figurative language is used in this sentence from James Joyce's "The Dead"? His soul swooned slowly as he heard the snow falling faintly through the universe and faintly falling. Choices I have are (A.) metaphor (B.) alliteration (C.) hyperbole (D.) euphemism

Answers

The correct answer is B. alliteration.

Alliteration is a figure of speech where the same consonant is repeated in neighboring words. As you can see in the sentence above, consonants such as S and F are repeated throughout.

Metaphor is a symbolic comparison of two or more things; hyperbole is exaggeration; euphemism is the opposite of hyperbole - using milder language to refer to something.

This sentence clearly uses (B) alliteration.

Alliteration is when words starting with the same letter are put closely together, i.e. soul, swooned, slowly and falling, faintly.

What word would you suggest to replace the underlined word or words in this excerpt? At first I felt very angry but then I felt so hopeless and depressed. I longed for her to call me. (5 points) euphonious amiable despondent euphoric

If the underlined words are so hopeless and depressed.
Then, I suggest you replace those words with DESPONDENT.

At first, I felt very angry but then I felt despondent. I longed for her to call me.

Despondent means feeling low or depress due to lost of hope. Actually the phrase "so hopeless and depressed" defines despondent.

Other choices means the exact opposite of despondent.
