Early English literature was written in Old English, which is vastly different from Modern English. Often, these texts are translated into more accessible language for modern readers. When reading these older forms of English, it can be difficult to understand the meaning, even if the language has been modified. In your opinion, what makes this literature so difficult to read? Is it the vocabulary, the characters, the type of storytelling, the density of the language, or something else? As you progressed through Old English texts to Middle English to Modern English, how did your understanding of the literature change? Can you explain what caused the change?

Answers

Well basically the just changed because overtime the meaning of words have changed. The way we talk and our context clues have shifted because some things from back then don't mean the same as they do now an example of this would be heartburn now it means that a pain in your heart from possibly to much grease, back then it was a way to describe jealousy. It is easy to understand the reading always through context clues! When you use the words around what you are reading the meaning of the word can change to what the author wanted it to mean! I think it only changed because people change and they make everything else that they say mean what they want. It also helps with the development of technology that we can edit text and use sights to help generalize words so that other people see the words how we want them to.

Answer:

Literature is so difficult to read because overtime the meaning of words has changed. They way we talk, they way we write, etc has shifted because some things from the past mean something different now. An example of this would be heartburn now it means that a pain in your heart from possibly to much grease, back then it was a way to describe jealousy. My underdstanding of literature changed because I had more knowledge and I learned what the old ways of literature once was. I believe over time, people grow and change, and when this happens, the language changed as well. Also, technology had a big part to do with language and how we speak to one another changed.Explanation:

The characteristics of a hurricane are powerful winds, driving rain, and raging seas. Although a storm must have winds blowing at least 74 miles an hour to be classified as a hurricane, it is not unusual to have winds above one hundred and fifty miles per hour in a major hurricane. The entire storm system can be five hundred miles in diameter, with lines of clouds that spiral toward a center called the "eye." Within the eye itself, which is about 15 miles across, the air is actually calm and cloudless. But this eye is enclosed by a towering wall of thick clouds where the storm's heaviest rains and highest winds are found. What is the main idea presented in this paragraph?

A. The eye of a hurricane is about 15 miles across.

B. Hurricanes have winds of at least 74 miles an hour.

C. Hurricanes are more destructive than tornadoes.

D. Hurricanes have very dangerous characteristics.

Answers

The hurricane's characteristics are explicitly described in the paragraph. It gives us ample ideas of how dangerous it is that it can cause destruction to people and properties.

Answer: D

Read the excerpt from "Save the Coral Reefs.”A study completed in 2004 found that seventy percent of our coral reefs are already destroyed or currently under threat of destruction. It also concluded that much of the wreckage to reefs has been caused by humans. The resiliency of the reefs is on our side, though. More can be done now to help the coral reefs bounce back—even flourish.

What is meaning of the word "resiliency” in this context?

the way an ecosystem supports plant and animal life
the manner in which an ecosystem decomposes
the ability of an ecosystem to recover from damage
the capability of one ecosystem to ruin another ecosystem

What is the author’s purpose in "Save the Coral Reefs”? Check all that apply.

to convince readers that practices that destroy coral reefs must be stopped
to entertain readers with a dramatic tale about the destruction of coral reefs
to inform readers about how the coral reefs are being destroyed
to inform readers about which fishing companies damage the coral reefs the most
to persuade readers to try scuba diving before the coral reefs are destroyed

Read the excerpt from "GM Food: Fuel for Our Future.”

Also, crops can be genetically engineered to be more nutritious. Golden rice, for example, has been altered to have more vitamin A than spinach. This is important because according to Scientific American, "Vitamin A deficiency causes more than one million deaths annually and half a million cases of irreversible blindness in the developing world.” Golden rice alone could help save millions of lives and prevent blindness.

Overall, our growing world desperately needs GM food to survive. The food these crops produce costs less and is safer and more nutritious than anything you could get from a traditional crop. As you can see, the benefits of GM food outweigh the far-fetched, unsubstantiated risks that critics have put forth.

Which phrases from the excerpt support the author’s argument that genetically modified food is safe? Check all that apply.

more vitamin A
you can see
could help save
traditional crop
unsubstantiated risks
more nutritious

Q1: The ability of an ecosystem to recover from damage.
In the text, it says "the resiliency of the reefs". From this we know that resiliency is a trait that the reefs have. In the next sentence, we see the context clues that define resiliency when it states "reefs bounce back-even flourish." When someone or something bounces back it recovers and returns to it's previous state.

Q2: to inform readers about how the coral reefs are being destroyed AND to convince readers that practices that destroy coral reefs must be stopped.
It is a "Check All That Apply" so more than one answer can be chosen. The passage title is "Save the Coral Reefs" and the selection ends with the sentence "More can be done now to help the coral reefs bounce back". These clues tell the reader that the author's purpose is to save the reefs. In order to do this the author needs to first explain how the reefs are being destroyed. Then convince readers to save the reefs by stopping the practices that destroy them.

Q3: "could help save" and "unsubstantiated risks".
It is important to pay attention to the question here. It is asking for phrases that support safety - not necessarily nutrition. A pixie stick is safe to eat, but not nutritious. The phrase "could help save" supports the idea that it is safe because it is being defined as possibly life and eye-saving. "Unsubstantiated risks" also shows safety because it state that any risks have not been proven and are therefore unfounded. Some of the other phrases such as "more vitamin A" and "more nutritious" support the argument that the food is healthier but are not used to specifically explain how safe it is.

  • Cities are known as Dead Places in John's world, and metal is thought to be cursed.

  • In the paragraph, John has arrived in New York, a massive dead city.

  • Despite his fear of the gods' ancient magic and the spirits, he has been taught to believe inhabit this location, his quest for knowledge is greater.

  • He decides to stay at the Dead Place for the night. During that night's nightmares, he discovers that there are no gods and no magic.
