Which statements accurately describe why the Renaissance began in Italy? Choose all answers that are correct. A. Arab traders sold ancient Greek manuscripts in Italy in return for classic works of Roman art. B. Italian city-states often competed with each other to attract the best artists, poets, and philosophers. C. Italy's connection to classical Rome had never died out because of the presence of Roman ruins throughout the peninsula. D. Italian city-states were isolated from the rest of Europe which protected them from crises elsewhere.

Answers

One major reason the Renaissance began in Italy is linked to its geography.  The city-states of Italy, on the Mediterranean Sea, were centers for trade and commerce, the first port of call for both goods and new ideas.  I'm not completely sure if it avoided crisis.

Italy was the core of the former Roman empire and at the collapse of the Byzantine empire in 1453, became the refuge for the intellectuals of Constantinople who brought with them many of the great works of the ancient Greeks and Romans, works that had been lost to the West during the Dark Ages.  Prior to this, scholars in Italy had been examining the works of the ancients, but they were not very good and often incomplete.

The third reason was political.  Because of many political changes, the Holy Roman Empire had essentially lost power in northern Italy, the papal states were governed by various leading families within each region, and the city of Naples dominated the South.

The Renaissance was a rebirth of ancient Greek and Roman thinking and styles, and both the Roman and Greek civilizations were Mediterranean cultures, as is Italy.  The best single reason for Italy as the birthplace of the Renaissance was the concentration of wealth, power, and intellect in the Church.

Final answer:

The Renaissance began in Italy due to competition amongst cities to attract talents (Option B) and a strong connection to Classical Rome (Option C). The influence of Arab traders or isolation from the rest of Europe were not primary factors.

Explanation:

Renaissance, a period of great cultural change and achievement, started in Italy due to a number of factors. Italian city-states were constantly competing against each other to attract the finest artists, poets, and philosophers, driving innovation and discovery (Option B). This competition spurred the spread of new ideas and artistic styles. Additionally, Italy's connection to Classical Rome was still very much alive due to the extensive presence of Roman ruins throughout the peninsula (Option C). This connection to ancient culture inspired a revival of classical learning.

However, the statement that Arab traders sold ancient Greek manuscripts in exchange for Roman art does not factor significantly into why the Renaissance began in Italy (Option A). Also, the claim that Italian city-states were isolated from the rest of Europe is incorrect (Option D). In fact, trade and cultural exchange with the rest of Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa was a vital part of the Italian Renaissance.
