Even though water is a liquid, some insects are able to stand on its surface due to water's high surface tension. Unbalanced forces pull the water molecules inward which causes the surface of the liquid to have properties similar to that of a stretched elastic membrane. What is responsible for the unbalanced forces in water?A. ionic bonds
B. a neutral pH
C. hydrogen bonds

Answers

Answer 1
Answer: The answer is letter C. hydrogen bonds. Surface tension in water, which makes water form drops and causes the surface to form a curve above the mouth of a container, results from the water molecules being strongly held by H bonds to those water molecules beside and beneath them. The cohesion among water molecules and the adhesion of water to other materials like rock and soil make capillarity possible.

Why are units used that are to express the densities of gases different from those used to express the densities of solids or liquids

Answers

If the units for gases were the same as the units for numbers would be too small to be convenient.

For example, the density of iron is 7.87 g/cm³.

Using the same units, the density of hydrogen is 0.000 0899 g/cm³.

It is much more convenient to express the density in numbers that are easier to visualize: 0.0899 g/L, and that is still a small number.

Given the formula:The bond between which two atoms has the greatest degree of polarity?
A. C and C
B. C and O
C. H and C
D. H and O

Answers

The bond between hydrogen and oxygen has the greatest degree of polarity as there is wide electronegativity difference between the atoms.

What is an atom?

An atom is defined as the smallest unit of matter which forms an element. Every form of matter whether solid, liquid , gas consists of atoms . Each atom has a nucleus which is composed of protons and neutrons and shells in which the electrons revolve.

The protons are positively charged and neutrons are neutral and hence the nucleus is positively charged. The electrons which revolve around the nucleus are negatively charged and hence the atom as a whole is neutral and stable due to presence of oppositely charged particles.

Atoms of the same element are similar as they have number of sub- atomic particles which on combination do not alter the chemical properties of the substances.

I would say D because oxygen is a highly electronegative atom and the OH b bonding is known to have high levels of polarity for example H-O-H in water.  This is why alcohols are miscible in water eventhough they are mostly non-polar.

The CH bond is more likely to be non-polar as it is with alot of hydrocarbons.
