The back yard was covered in late afternoon sunlight. The leaves danced in the trees, delighted that spring had finally arrived. The tulips were bright slashes of color like a child's crayon drawing. In the garden, the first green shoots were pushing out of the soil to greet the warmth of the sun. Sitting on the porch swing, I drank in the beauty of nature, a delicious treat. Which phrase from the paragraph is an example of a metaphor?A. In late afternoon sunlight B. The beauty of nature, a delicious treat C. Greet the warmth of the sun D. Let's take an example.  An adverb is basically an adjective for a verb: it describes a verb, and often ends in -ly.  Here's a sentence, WITHOUT PROPER PUNCTUATION: "Slowly Anna walked."  What fits here?

Let's work backwards.  If D is correct: "Slowly. Anna walked."  This is incorrect, because this would make "slowly" part of a separate sentence, not the beginning of the same sentence.  This is the same situation for C.  If it were correct: "Slowly! Anna walked."  This makes it a separate sentence, so C is incorrect.  What about B?  "Slowly; Anna walked."  This is incorrect because it makes "slowly" too separate from "Anna walked."  Semicolons are used for completely separate ideas, NOT adverbs.  The only right answer is A: "Slowly, Anna walked."  This separates the adverb enough so it doesn't confuse, but you still know we are really saying "Anna walked slowly."

Answer: A: a comma

How Things Work

By Gary Soto

Today it's going to cost us twenty dollars
To live. Five for a softball. Four for a book,
A handful of ones for coffee and two sweet rolls,
Bus fare, rosin for your mother's violin.
We're completing our task. The tip I left
For the waitress filters down
Like rain, wetting the new roots of a child
Perhaps, a belligerent cat that won't let go
Of a balled sock until there's chicken to eat.
As far as I can tell, daughter, it works like this:
You buy bread from a grocery, a bag of apples
From a fruit stand, and what coins
Are passed on helps others buy pencils, glue,
Tickets to a movie in which laughter
Is thrown into their faces.
If we buy goldfish, someone tries on a hat.
If we buy crayons, someone walks home with a broom.
A tip. a small purchase here and there,
And things just keep going. I guess.

I understand that this poem is about money, it is about how this person is about giving. This person wants to be cheap, but also give to other people in the process. The way he talked about the stuff they needed it sounded like he was talking to someone, maybe his son or daughter, teaching them about giving. Hope this helped!
