How did the War Powers Act of 1973 impact the role of the president?

Answers

Answer 1
Answer:

Answer: The act placed a limit on the president's ability to send troops into hostile areas.

Context/detail:

Passed in 1973 over the veto of President Richard Nixon, the War Powers Resolution (its official name) blocks presidents from continuing the pursuance of a war without Congress's approval.  In practice, however, the War Powers Act has often been sidestepped by presidents.  The US Constitution leaves some tension in place between the legislative and executive branch when it comes to the country's involvement in war.  Article I of the Constitution gives Congress the power to declare war.  But Article II names the President the Commander-in-Chief, and presidents frequently have understood that role as containing the authority to deploy US forces without first getting congressional approval.  The War Powers Act has been an ongoing point of controversy as US forces have been sent into all sorts of conflict zones in the 21st century without formal declarations of war.

Answer 2
Answer: The war powers act of 1973 came into place as a result of the actions of LBJ in the Vietnam war, he had been very secretive about how many troops he ordered and how he was conducting the war.  The War powers act of 1973 stated that the president was required to inform congress on war policies/strategies, and the president could not send troops to a foreign power for more than 60 days without declaration of war by Congress.  It was vetoed by president Nixon, but congress passed it over his veto.  This law impacted the role of the president by limiting his/her power when it comes to war.  Today, it essentially acts as another "check" in the system of checks and balances by making sure that the Executive branch (president) does't have too much power over foreign policy.  Hope this helps!

Imagining yourself as a delegate from a state like New York, make a claim as to whether the Constitution should be ratifiedUse clear and specific evidence, and draw from at least two sources to support your perspective. Include at least one

Answers

Answer:

Imagining myself as a state delegate, I will make my complaint in the form of a letter.

Explanation:

Gentlemen

Due to the importance of creating the constitution for the success of our country, I decided to write this letter informing you of some concerns that I have to make myself want the constitution not to be ratified.

First, I believe that the constitution is unfair to some social groups. While recognizing the objective of you to establish a just, efficient government that promotes freedom and equality, the constitution does not have any guidelines in favor of women and blacks, who are extremely important to the country.

I recognize that the constitution does not hurt any of our rights as men responsible for maintaining and fighting for national sovereignty, but we cannot seek freedom just for us, even more so in a country that we establish freedom as its highest attraction, in addition to working to keep it.

By excluding women and blacks during the creation of the constitution, we are limiting these individuals to take advantage of all the privileges that our land can offer, in addition to presenting a contradictory constitution, as well as our thinking.

That said, I would like to ask that the constitution be edited before it is ratified, and I urge you to consider my suggestion.

Kind regards,

M.C.

Answer:

On the issue of ratifying the Constitution or not, I suggest that approving the Constitution is an efficient idea for the future of the United States. Our current problem of the balancing of state and federal power would be solved if we adapt the newly drafted constitution. It guarantees fair distribution of necessary and basic rights; protection of life, liberty, and property; and popular sovereignty. It also delegates a stronger, centralized power to the government, which could easily suppress violent uprisings and protect the citizens with its well-organized military power. We need a stronger government because of possible threats from other nations and internal conflict we are facing now. According to statesman Alexander Hamilton, a centralized national government with the ability to levy taxes is a fair balanced government; besides, the Constitution is open for interpretation. With the example of Shays’s Rebellion, the government under the Articles of Confederation was not able to hold down the rebellion due to a lack of military power. As a consequence, the United States population suffered massive casualties. Anti-federalists may say that ratifying the Constitution is risking popular freedom and sovereignty. However, the Constitution is “balancing” the powers, not usurping or taking away the power of the state to give the central government unlimited authority. Therefore, with all reasons being stated, I suggest that ratifying the Constitution would bring America more security and shared powers between the state and government, which would help create a more prosperous, balanced future for the United States.
