A coin bank contains twice as many nickels as dimes and five times as many pennies as dimes. The value of the collection is $2.00 or 200cents. How many pennies, nickels,and dimes are in the collection?

Answers

Answer 1
Answer: n=number of nickles
d=number of dimes
p=number of pennies

so we have
"twice as many nickles as dimes"
n=2d
"five times as many pennies as dimes"
p=5d

we know that the total value is 200 cents

value=5n+10d+1p
200=5n+10d+p

we know that
n=2d
p=5d
sub those for n and p
200=5(2d)+10d+5d
200=10d+10d+5d
200=25d
divide both sides by 25
8=d
there are 8 dimes

easy, sub
n=2d
n=2(8)
n=16
16 nickles

p=5d
p=5(8)
P=40
40 pennies

40 pennies
16 nicles
8 dimes

two nascar cars are racing around a 2 mile track. one car can complete a lap in 48 seconds, and the other car can complete one lap in 40 seconds. if they start side by side, after how much time will they be side by side again

Answers

First we need to find the speed of each car using the formula

s=(d)/(t), where s is the speed, d is the distance and t is time.

s=(2)/(48)=0.0417 miles/s

s=(2)/(40) = 0.05miles/s

Since they are moving in the same direction we subtract the speeds to obtain relative velocity, V_r

V_r = 0.05-0.0417= 0.0083 miles/s, then

t=(2)/(0.0083)= 240s.  This is the time it takes for the fastest car to complete an extra lap relative to the slower car.

Mark’s garden is a rectangle that is meters long and meters wide.

This problem doesn't really have anything we can work with. But the possibilities are that we have values for the length and width. The question for this problem would most likely be the area or the perimeter. So if we re given the length L and the width W, the perimeter of the rectangle would have to be 2L + 2W and the area will be LW.

Define a function. Describe what the vertical line test is used for. Describe a real life situation that can be represented by a function.

Answers

A function is a relationship with a quantity (number). For example, if you made a table, and had one side be 1 2 3 4 5 (X axis) and then the y axis (other side) be 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, the function (rule) would be y= x5. The vertical line test is used to see if a graph has a function or not, so if it creates a vertical line on a graph, it has a function.
A real life situation would be miles per hour, so, for the x axis (hours) it said 1, and for the y axis (miles) it would be 60, this means in a duration of 1 hour you went 60 miles. Well, lets say you went 2 hours driving, the miles would be 120.
For 3 hours, it would be 180. The function here is y= x60!
