The Treaty of Mesilla, which went into force on June 8, 1854, gave the United States possession of a 29,670-square-mile (76,800 km2) portion of what is now southern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico. This area is known as the Gadsden Purchase or Treaty of La Mesilla.
The United States sought to construct a transcontinental railroad along a deep southern route, which the Southern Pacific Railroad eventually completed in 1881–1883; the purchase comprised holdings south of the Gila River and west of the Rio Grande. The purchase was also intended to address other border problems.
Therefore, a deal between the United States and Mexico was finished in 1854, when the United States agreed to pay Mexico $10 million for a region of Mexico that was 29,670 square miles in size and ultimately became a part of Arizona and New Mexico.
