Define nationalism and imperialism and explain how one has affected the other in history by using an example from Japanese history.

Answers

Nationalism is an ideology which affects social, political and economic political systems. It is based on the protection of sovereignty of the country and maintaining a national identity free of foreign intervention. It defends and promotes national interest over foreign relations.

Imperialism is an ideology or practice that promotes expansion and dominion over other countries, aquiring new territories and colonies, and exercising control over them.

For example, during World War II, the Japanese government promoted a nationalistic ideology amongst the people to create unity against foreign invasion and colonization. Fear was used to generate nationalism, because they acted in response to foreign threats. Nationalism affects Imperialism because it reinforces the idea of one country being better than the other. Fear of external intervention leads to the idea the "offence is the best defense": in order to protect our nation, we have to expand our territory. It can be said that nationalism becomes an excuse for imperialism.

The rise of the hippie movements, the "New Left" and black militant organizations caused a major polarization between classes, generations and races.

However, it was the Vietcong conflict that had hit the head of state the most by the end of 1967, there were 500,000 Americans in Vietnam, with around one thousand fallen per month, most of them recruits. In early 1968, Minister Robert McNamara announced an imminent end to hostilities as there was a lower intensity of combat by the North Vietnamese. Johnson's approval only reached 35%, which caused serious doubts about his future at the Oval Hall

President Johnson and his refusal to run for reelection

Explanation:

When President Johnson announced that he would not run the 1968 election, chaos and uncertainty aroused in the crowd. The reasons why president Johnson decided not to run for reelection in 1968 are multiple and controvertial. One of the most plausible was Vietnam as he had dedided to partially halt the U.S bombing. However,  his poor health and his anxiety about it were also other strong reasons why the president rejected the reelection of 1968.
