Song of the Open Road

by Walt Whitman

Afoot and light-hearted, I take to the open road,
Healthy, free, the world before me,
The long brown path before me, leading wherever I choose.

Henceforth I ask not good-fortune—I myself am good-fortune;
Henceforth I whimper no more, postpone no more, need nothing,
Strong and content, I travel the open road. . . .

From this hour, freedom!
From this hour I ordain myself loos’d of limits and imaginary lines,
Going where I list, my own master, total and absolute,
Listening to others, and considering well what they say,
Pausing, searching, receiving, contemplating,
Gently, but with undeniable will, divesting myself of the holds that would hold me.

I inhale great draughts of space;
The east and the west are mine, and the north and the south are mine.

I am larger, better than I thought;
I did not know I held so much goodness.

All seems beautiful to me;
I can repeat over to men and women, You have done such good to me, I would do the same to you.

I will recruit for myself and you as I go;
I will scatter myself among men and women as I go;
I will toss the new gladness and roughness among them;
Whoever denies me, it shall not trouble me;
Whoever accepts me, he or she shall be blessed, and shall bless me.

Question 1
Part A

What is a theme of "Song of the Open Road"?

Traveling is a freeing experience that allows for independence and self-reflection.

Being rooted in one place doing everyday activities is better than wandering alone on the open road.

Taking a vacation allows someone to spend meaningful time with friends and family.

Only when people are traveling can they truly prioritize the needs of others over their own needs.
Question 2
Part B

Which two quotes from the poem best help Whitman develop the theme identified in Part A?

"I will recruit for myself and you as I go; / I will scatter myself among men and women as I go;"

"Pausing, searching, receiving, contemplating, / Gently, but with undeniable will, divesting myself of the holds that would hold me."

"I can repeat over to men and women, You have done such good to me, I would do the same to you."

"From this hour, freedom! / From this hour I ordain myself loos’d of limits and imaginary lines,"

In “The Lagoon” by Joseph Conrad, why does Arsat keep insisting that he loves his brother?

Arsat feels tremendous guilt for what has happened.
Arsat intends to go back to rescue his brother.
The white man questions Arsat’s love for his brother.
The white man says he never had a brother.

Answers

Arsat keeps insisting that he loves his brother because Arsat feels tremendous guilt for what has happened. When fleeing the pursuers, he does not wait for his brother as originally planned and turns his back on his cries. He betrayed his own brother for the woman he loves and he ends up losing both, causing great sadness. He states early in the story that he is not a whole man because his love has half of his heart, supposedly a way to convince himself that he was not man enough to save his brother. Upon her death, he is a whole man once more, but it is too late and he can only feel guilt and grief.

Answer:

Arsat feels tremendous guilt for what has happened

Why is hard to change somebody's mind or yours?

Answers

Because people believe what they heard first or growing up, people have a set idea of something and people are stubborn.

Answer:

Normally when someone has decided that their mind has been made up. It is very difficult to change it. Our minds have been trained to keep an idea and not let go. Our minds tend to refuse most facts. So instead of having, lets say and opinion, that is based off of facts it is made up of emotions and how that 'opinion' makes you feel. The chemicals in your brain makes it hard to let go of an idea or opinion.

Read the sentence from a research paper. Some online communities utilize software that makes it easier to find research resources (Timmons, 2012, p.16). According to APA style, sentences such as his are called a(n) _____. A. plagiarized element B. direct quotation C. in-text citation D. works cited

Answers

Answer:

Your answer would be that sentences such as the above are called in--text citations (C).

Explanation:

The sentence above is an example of the APA in-text citation. In-text citations are included when you are adding information from another individual's work into your own project. When you add text word-for-word from another source into your own project or when you paraphrase, you create an in-text citation. Such citations are short and are placed in the body of the text right after the borrowed information. An APA in-text citation includes the following items: the last name(s) of the author(s) (Timmons), the year the source was published (2012), and sometimes the page or location of the information (p. 16).

I believe it is C, an in-text citation because it isn't A since you've cited the source, it's not a full works cited like D, and it's not in quotes so it's not a direct quotation like B. Hopefully that helps you out!

In North America, I have photographed cactus plants from Mexico to Canada, and I think Arizona cacti are the most beautiful.Which capitalized word is used as an adjective?

Answers

Answer:

"Arizona" is the adjective in the sentence.

Explanation:

Adjectives are those words that add to, modify or describe a noun in a more specified way. They give more meaning and description to the nouns or pronouns they are associated to. In the following sentence-

"In North America, I have photographed cactus plants from Mexico to Canada, and I think Arizona cacti are the most beautiful."

the writer is talking of the various cactus plants that he/she had photographed. And among those, he finds the Arizona cacti the most beautiful. By naming the cacti as a specific being, 'Arizona' is used as an adjective in this case as it gives the description of the particular cactus that the narrator finds most beautiful.

Arizona is describing cacti, which makes it an adjective.
