The correct answer is that during the Freedom Summer Campaign some workers were arrested or killed.

The Freedom Summer Campaign, or the Mississippi Summer Project, was a volunteer campaign in the United States that was launched in June 1964 to register African-American citizens of the Mississippi state into electoral lists.

On June 21, 1964, three activists were kidnapped and murdered. The regional police sheriff, members of the municipal police, and Ku Klux Klan were involved in the murder. The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). However, even after finding the bodies and indicating the FBI suspects, the Mississippi refused to sue the allegations of murder. The perpetrators were therefore tried under federal law for violating civil rights. Nine perpetrators were sentenced to 3 to 10 years in prison. However, they were the most likely to sit for 6.5 years.

During the FBI investigation, two other bodies were found. Those belonged to African-American students, Charles Eddie Moore and Henry Hezekiah Dee. The state of Mississippi has already punished the African-Americans involved in the campaign in May. In 1964, a total of 600 students from the local Alcorn State University were excluded. Another 5 people remained missing after the summer of 1964, but local police refused to announce a search.
