Poe was later taken by John and Frances Allan from Richmond, Virginia. They never officially adopted Poe, but still cared for him well into adulthood. Tension arises between John Allan and Edgar Poe associated with debts arising from gambling and Poe's school fees. Edgar Poe then entered the University of Virginia but had to depart a year later because he had no money. Edgar Poe also argued with John Allan about his school funds and decided to enlist within the Army in 1827.

That's when Poe's writing career began after he published a group of anonymous short stories titled Tamerlane and Other Poems (1827), under the name 'a Boston'.
