The Tidewater area is mainly composed of flat lowlands that forms a huge plain all along the coast line. The Piedmont region is located west of the Tidewater region and it is characterized by a line of foothills which systematically increase their elevation along their extension.  

Between these two regions there is a very well defined and clear boundary called the Fall Line. It is very impressive because the landscape abruptly changes when the foothills fall into the plains.
