For example, after several volcano eruptions in a stretch of the desert, the field mice population, over the next generations, gradually became black, rather than their original tan color.

This is because the vast desert sands were replaced with large patches of black volcano rock, so the mice that were previously able to camouflage and avoid detection by predators now weren't able to.

On the other hand, genetically mutated black field mice now had a far greater chance of surviving, and hence the population of field mice gradually became black.

This example illustrates how a change in the environment, caused the process of natural selection and ultimately the characteristic of having black fur to be more advantageous.

Over time, the process of natural selection made it so that the field mice population was black.
