What are some fancy words you would personally use in an essay for an application? I'm filling out an application for a homeschooling program, and I want to impress. It's coming along pretty nice, but I'd love to see some word's that you guys' think I could add, or overall just some advice to make my essay part of the application even better. Thanks in advance!

Answer 1
Answer: Using fancy words isn't the way to impress. Since you're asking other people for some words, there's a higher chance that you'll accidentally use them wrong. What you're saying is what matters. Whether or not you're able to get your point across is what matters and using "fancy" words isn't going to help with that. I bet what you have is great. Just make sure you're getting your point across and you'll be fine.

Writing can be compared to building a house. Which of the following stages of construction is most similar to prewriting?drawing up architectural plans for the building
nailing in the flooring
putting the house up for sale

Drawing up architectural plans for the building because like prewriting, it is one of the first steps in the process. I hope that helps! :)

A.  drawing up architectural plans for the building

Prewriting can take the form of many different things.  Prewriting can be brainstorming where all you really need to do is think about ideas; however, you could write them down should you wish.  Clustering and freewriting are also forms of prewriting.  The type of prewriting that is most like drawing up architectural plans for a building would be outlining.  In outlining, you’ll create a plan that will allow you to visually organize your points and follow them in the creation of a paper in much the same way as building plans will be followed in the creation of a structure.

The topic sentence of a paragraph is one of the most important because it directs and summarizes the focus of the entire paragraph. If the topic sentence of your paragraph is lousy, the rest of the paragraph would probably be as lousy as the topic sentence.
