I stood against the far wall of the shabby lobby avoiding eye contact with the doorman as my dad checked us in for the night. We’d hoped to make it as far as Scranton, but the weather had interfered, leaving us instead at an eyesore of a truck-stop motel. My ear buds were jammed in as far as comfort would allow in a vain attempt to block out the motel’s vibe. Still, I could not ignore the looming presence of the doorman. He stood in the dim portico, sweeping and re-sweeping a pile of lint on the floor, watching the parking lot with his watery eyes, and occasionally signaling to the whiskered clerk behind the desk. I run for my lifeWhat does this sentence mean? How to understand "for my life"? What scenario is it?

Answers

Its just an expression.

Example: I could eat a cow

It just means that you run as fast as you can.
Well this is just an expression and it's expressed as I ran for my life. All this means is that the character is running as fast as the character can, like his life is on the line, thus seeming that the character is "running for his life". The scenario that this expression is used in is when either the character needs to get somewhere, fast, or is actually running away from something. There are rare times where I ran for my life is a literal meaning in which they are running from a threat.

D.

Answers

C. would be an example of dialect.

Dialect is the sound or form of a language in a specific region.  Choices A, B, and D just give words in a sentence the way they are supposed to be spelled; you can't tell how they were pronounced.  Choice C changes the spelling of the words and adds apostrophes to show some of the different pronunciations in the sentence. For example, Choice C doesn't say "the", it says "th'". It gives you a clue to how it would be pronounced in this dialect.
