She believes this to be lucky, and does not want to compete without it. Ariel, on the other hand, has found the cap, and is unsure about whether to give it back. If she does not, then she has better chances of winning as Maria will most likely not compete. However, Ariel finally gives back the lucky cap. The theme of the story is that it is not always about winning or losing, but about showing integrity.
