How do you know the correct order in which to evaluate algebraic expressions?

Answers

Answer 1
Answer: In solving algebraic expressions, there is an order in which to solve it.

1) perform the operation inside the parenthesis first
2) then perform the operation with the exponents
3) apply multiplication and division from left to right of the equation.
4) apply addition and subtraction from left to right of the equation.

Remember this: PEMDAS for easier recall. (parenthesis, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction)
Answer 2
Answer: To evaluate algebraic expressions there is no order. You just need to follow something called pemdas. The way to remember this is

p = please
e = excuse
m = my
d = dear
a= aunt
s = sally

So just remember Please excuse my dear aunt sally or pemdas.

P = parentheses (Apply from left tor right)
E = exponent (Apply from left tor right)
M = multiplication (Apply from left tor right)
D = division (Apply from left tor right)
A = addition (Apply from left tor right)
S = subtraction (Apply from left tor right)

Then solve!

Hope this helps!! xD

Answer:

BENCH:150

LAWN:200

Step-by-step explanation:

B+L=350

75B+40L=19250

75B+40(350-B)=19250

75B+14000-40B=19250

75B-40B=5250

35B=5250

B=150

L=200

Answer: the answer is 40 units squared

Step-by-step explanation:

the SA with a rectangular and square base is 2*s²+4*s*h

2*s²= the surface area

4*s*h= sideways (lateral)

s= 2 and h=4

so then plug it into "2*s²+4*s*h" and you get 2*2²+4*2*4

2*2²+4*2*4

2(4)+32

Answer:

b = 12

Step-by-step explanation:

The mistake Megan has made is that she has squared the lengths and then added it instead of taking away the squared length's. The method she used was to work out the hypotenuse, so the correct method would be as follows:

a² + b² = c²

→ Substitute in the values

5² + b² = 13²

→ Simplify the equation

25 + b² = 169

→ Minus 25 from both sides to isolate b²

b² = 144

→ Square root both sides to find the value of b

b = 12

5. A rectangular pool ha a length that is 13 meters longer than its width. perimeter is74 meters. What is the width Its of this pool?

Answers

Good evening Brian,

For this problem, let's look at what we're given.  So we have a pool with a length that is 13 m (meters) longer than its width, and we're given the perimeter, or distance around the entire pool, which is 74 m.

We know that the pool has a rectangular shape and that the perimeter of a rectangle is width + length + width + length ⇒ 2(W) + 2(L).

Given the information provided, we can rewrite the equation to fit this problem.  Since we're told that the length is equal to 13 m + the width, so we can represent the length as W +13 m.  We can now rewrite the perimeter equation to be:

2(w) + 2 (w + 13 m) ⇒ 2(w) + 2(w) + 2(13 m) ⇒ 4(w) + 26 m = 74 m.

We're down to one variable now so this should be easy.  Subtract 26 m from both sides,

4(w) = 48 m

Now divide each side by 4 in order to find the width.

w = 12 m

-Hope this helps!
