Contrast the movement of charges in a series circuit and in a parallel circuit.

Answers

Answer 1
Answer:
In a series circuit, there is only one possible path from one battery
terminal, through the circuit, to the other battery terminal.  All of the
current that leaves one side of the battery travels exactly the same
path to the other side of the battery.  There's never any point in the
circuit where the current has a choice of which way to go.

In a parallel circuit, there are different possible paths.  On its way
through the circuit, the current comes to a point where it has a
choice of going this way or that way.  What happens at that point
is that the current splits up ... part of it goes this way, and the rest
of it goes that way, and it all joins up together again somewhere
else in the circuit.

In this section of a circuit, a current of 5.0 A flows across R1. Find the potential difference between point a and point b. Let R1 = 3.0 ohm, R2 = 8.0 ohm, and R3 = 10.0 ohm.

Answers

B) 37 V

The potential difference between point a and point b is equal to 37 V

Explanation:

The potential difference across a and b can be calculated by finding the equivalent resistance of the resistors R1, R2 and R3 and then by applying Ohm's law.

Given:

R1 = 3.0 Ω

R2 = 8.0 Ω

R3 = 10.0

Current = I = 5 A

To calculate equivalent resistance of the circuit:

R2 and R3 are connected in parallel configuration. The equivalent resistance of R2 and R3 can be calculated as

(1)/(R_p) =(1)/(R_2) + (1)/(R_3) \n\n(1)/(R_p)=(1)/(8) + (1)/(10)= (5+4)/(40) = (9)/(40) \n\n (1)/(R_p)=(9)/(40) \n\nR_p=(40)/(9)\ ohms

Resistance R1 is in series with Rp. The equivalent series resistance is calculated as

R_s = R1+R_p = 3+(40)/(9)= (27+40)/(9) = (67)/(9) = 7.44\ ohms

Thus the given 3 resistor circuit can be written as an equivalent resistance Rs equal to 7.44 Ω through which current I passes.

By Ohm's law;

If V is the potential difference between a and b

Potential difference across points a and b = Current flowing through the circuit × Resistance between points a and b

V = I* R_s = 5* 7.44 = 37.2\ V

37.2 V ≈ 37 V

Therefore, the potential difference between point a and point b is equal to 37 V

Which object would have a LARGER gravitational force acting upon it? (assume the objects are at the same height above the Earth.) A) 5 kg block of wood
B) 100 kg person
C) 412 kg motorcycle
D) 2540 kg elephant

Answers

The object having higher mass will experience higher gravitational force. Among the given things 2540 kg elephant  experiences  larger gravitational force.

What is gravitational force?

Gravitational force is the force acting down wards which pulls all objects in the earth surface into the ground. Gravitational force is comparatively weaker than nuclear force and magnetic force.

Gravitational pulling experienced by a body is depends upon the height it exists and the mass of the body. As the height from the earth's surface increases, gravity decreases.

Similarly higher the mass of a body, higher will be attractive pull by the earth. The equation for gravitational force is written below:

Force = G m /r², here r is the distance from the earth surface or theoretically for earth it is the radius.

Thus, as mass increases so does gravity. Therefore, a 2540 kg elephant experience highest gravitational force among the other options.

If the objects are all at the same distance from the center
of the Earth, then the gravitational forces between the Earth
and each object only depend on the mass of each object.
Those forces are least for the 5kg object, and greatest for
the 2,540kg object.

The gravitational force that attracts each object toward the
center of the Earth is typically referred to as the object's "weight".

It's important to know that there's another force of gravity ... the one
that attracts the Earth toward the object.  And that one is equal to
the object's weight, but pulls in the opposite direction.

Your weight on the Earth is equal to the Earth's weight on you.
