What is a spring? A spring is a water resource formed when the side of a hill, a valley bottom or other excavation intersects a flowing body of groundwater at or below the local water table, below which the subsurface material is saturated with water. A spring is the result of an aquifer being filled to the point that the water overflows onto the land surface. They range in size from intermittent seeps, which flow only after much rain, to huge pools flowing hundreds of millions of gallons daily. Springs are not limited to the Earth's surface, though. Recently, scientists have discovered hot springs at depths of up to 2.5 kilometers in the oceans, generally along mid - ocean rifts ( spreading ridges) . The hot water ( over 300 degrees Celsius) coming from these springs is also rich in minerals and sulfur, which results in a unique ecosystem where unusual and exotic sea life seems to thrive. Water flow from springs. The amount of water that flows from springs depends on many factors, including the size of the caverns within the rocks, the water pressure in the aquifer, the size of the spring basin, and the amount of rainfall. Human activities also can influence the volume of water that discharges from a spring-ground-water withdrawals in an area can reduce the pressure in an aquifer, causing water levels in the aquifer system to drop and ultimately decreasing the flow from the spring. Most people probably think of a spring as being like a pool of water - and normally that is the case. But springs can occur when geologic, hydrologic, or human forces cut into the underground layers of soil and rock where water is in movement. Courtesy of the U.S Geological Survey. No. You have appropriately answered this question. You can cutoff some unwanted points if you think it might be too much, but according to me it is perfect. They are relevant because you have used the statistics wherever it is needed and the information from reliable resources. You can use it even for studying for your exams. As well, I have noted another point that you have used advanced vocabulary for this. The text has beautifully covered all the points needed for, as an answer.

In at least 150 words, explain Rukmani's opinion about what effect the tannery has on the village?

Answers

Answer:

Rukmani did not like the tannery coming into their village. She despised it for changing the way their village is turned into after these white men came.

Explanation:

In the story Nectar in a Sieve by Kamala Markandaya, the village life of rural India is presented neatly as a representation of the difficult life it entails. The narrator and protagonist of the story is Rukmani, a literate woman married to a lower class, Nathan who is a migrant worker.

When at first the white men workers arrived, everyone seemed enthralled with the prospect of having a tannery in the village. But for Rukmani, she wasn't supportive of the idea of these men coming into the village. She may have also liked them coming at first but when they left, she was unimpressed with what they had done to them. They also changed the whole village life, Rukmani stating that "They had invaded our village with clatter and din, had taken from us the maidan where our children played, and had made the bazaar prices too high for us". She also claims they "lay their hands upon us and we are all turned from tilling to barter, and hoard our silver since we cannot spend it, and see our children go without the food that their children gorge". In short, the tannery is the villain in their lives, which will turn tragic for almost all of her family members.

Construction begins on a tannery (where animal hides are cured for other uses) in Rukmani’s village. The building of the tannery is quite a spectacle. Lots of men from the outside world come in with carts and bricks. The colonial structure is in place here, too: there is an Indian boss oversees the builders; a white man oversees the entire operation.
The tannery changes how people work in the village: the building workmen are paid well, and the village people are occupied in supplying their mounting needs, from rope and bricks to fruit and sweetmeats. The workmen bring in their families and live in little huts with them, mostly isolated from villagers.
In two months, the tannery is completed, and the workmen suddenly disappear. Everything is quiet in the village for a while, which gives people time to reflect on the influence of the workmen. While Rukmani resented the noise brought with them, she, like many others, benefited economically from being able to sell to the workers.
Rukmani regrets that the tannery has come to her village. Nathan assures her that they will be back, and there’s nothing that can be done about it. Sure enough, Nathan is right: new men replace the men who left. They bring their wives and families, but they also bring pollution, the stink of liquor brewing, their noisy habits, and all-around calamity.
The tannery also results in new parental restrictions for Ira. Up until this time, Ira had been allowed to roam freely, but neighbors notice that suddenly the men are paying attention to the young girl. She is beautiful, if only thirteen. Rukmani and Nathan suddenly curtail her freedom to protect her from the workmen, and to protect the family from gossip. Though Ira resents the new limitations, she is obedient.

Which sentence contains an adjective clause? A. My new electric piano, which includes over 1,000 different settings, is fun to play. B. When I first learn a difficult piece, I play it very slowly. C. I have taken piano lessons since I was six years old. D. If I put on headphones, I can play the electric piano without disturbing others.

Answers

An adjective clause is basically a phrase (to be exact, a dependent clause: a group of words that can't be a sentence) that provides more description.  It begins with a pronoun or adverb, like: who, whom, that, which, when, where, or why.  It is not necessary to the sentence, so you can take it out and it still makes sense.

Let's work backwards.  D is "If I put on headphones, I can play the electric piano without disturbing others."  "If I put on headphones" is a phrase, a dependent clause, providing more description.  Does it start with one of the words above?  No.  Is it necessary to the sentence?  Yes, because this is the whole point of the sentence: to tell you HOW the character can play the piano without disturbing others, using headphones.  D is incorrect.

Here's C: "I have taken piano lessons since I was six years old."  "Since I was six years old" provides more description and is dependent.  Does it start with one of the words above?  No.  Is it necessary to the sentence?  Yes, because again, it's the point of the sentence.  "I have taken piano lessons" doesn't tell you much!  C is incorrect.

What about B?  "When I first learn a difficult piece, I play it very slowly."  "When I first learn a difficult piece" provides more description, and is a dependent clause.  Does it start with one of the words above?  YES: it starts with "when"!!  We're getting closer.  But is it necessary to the sentence?  Try it: "I play it very slowly."  But WHY does the character play it slowly?  This phrase IS necessary, to explain, because it's the point of the sentence!  B is incorrect.

That just leaves A: "My new electric piano, which includes over 1,000 different settings, is fun to play."  The dependent clause providing more description is "which includes over 1,000 different settings."  Does it start with one of the words above?  YES, it starts with "which"!!  Is it necessary to the sentence?  Try it without the clause.  "My new electric piano is fun to play."  That works!!  The clause is NOT necessary, starts with "which," AND provides more description!  We have our winner!

Answer: A
A. my new electric piano which include over 1,000 different settings is fun to play
